If Greg Abbott is “pausing” data centers, then why is a data center with an on-site gas power plant being planned in Bastrop County?
Thousands of its residents are now at risk of living near a gas-powered data center that is planned in Cedar Creek. It’s literally behind an outdoor school for kids.
The EPA recommends that people live one to three miles from a power plant. Tell Pacifico Energy to leave Bastrop County.
“We love liberty and a lack of regulation. Data centers are taking advantage of it. They saw an opportunity.”
— Greg Harrell, Hood County GOP chair
HOW THIS HAPPENED:
While Abbott temporarily took data centers off the grid, they can still use gas-guzzling power plants on-premise.
This isn’t just a data center. This facility will be run by its own power plant.

A massive data centre at xAI’s controversial Colossus facility in Memphis, Tennessee is emitting huge plumes of pollution, according to footage recorded by an environmental watchdog group.
THE COMPLICATION:
County commissioners have little power to stop these gas-powered data centers across Texas.
So what if one of these facilities comes your way? Your local politicians have little control over it. It is not illegal to build gas power plants next to schools in unincorporated areas of Texas.
Hill country officials passed a ban on data centers, but backed off when developers threatened a major lawsuit.
While cities can pass laws against AI factories, they cannot control if AI factories build around them.
THE IMPLICATION:
This introduces significant harms to all Texans.
A wave of 130 AI factories could release as much greenhouse gas pollution as 27 million cars and trucks driving for a year.
Gas power plant fires are incredibly dangerous and can take days or weeks to put out.
Constant low frequency noise from turbines and fans causes mental, heart, and other health issues.
Gas power plants emit noxious gases that cause both respiratory and neurological disorders.
THE SOLUTION:
Take ten minutes to make three phone calls. Ask for a special session and moratorium on data centers, and vote out ANYONE who doesn’t prioritize this.
Help Texans stand up against multi-national corporations who are exploiting our laws.
Make sure you’re registered to vote. The deadline is October 5th.
